47 Ronin, Act 5: The Yamazaki Highway, 1859 by Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print

Kanadehon Chushingura

Dramatic illustration from Act 5 of the "Kanadehon Chushingura," the classic kabuki play based on the tale of the 47 ronin.

On the traveling on the Yamazaki Highway at night, the villainous Ono Sadakuro attacks and murders the elderly farmer Yoichibei for to steal his money bag.

The elderly man screams in terror as the villain Sadakuro advances upon him, gripping his sword upright with both hands.

The circular inset above shows Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Yoichibei's son-in-law Kampei out hunting, wearing a straw raincoat and carrying a gun over his shoulder.

Kawarazaki Gonjuro I appears in a double role, as he also plays Sadakuro, while Ichikawa Kodanji IV takes the part of Yoichibei.

A terrific image with large expressive figures capturing the intense emotion of the scene.
